The Story So Far

2005

May

  • Start advertising on AngloINFO Bretagne website for players.
  • Jon Ward meets with M. Sevano, the Maire of Josselin, to gain permission to use football pitch in Louis Chauveau stadium to stage an exhibition match at end of football season. Maire sets up meeting between Jon and M. Grignon of the Marie.
  • At the meeting with M. Grignon a date is agreed for staging the match. Unfortunately this subsequently has to be cancelled as the club did not have Public Liability insurance, and could not obtain it until an association was formed.

June

  • Play first game away at les Ormes. Come a distant 2nd!
  • Play second game at les Ormes. Teams are mixed together.

July

  • Article in Le Ploermelais (local paper) about cricket, with a picture of some of our team.
  • Jon Ward appears on Radio 4’s Today program, talking about difficulties of setting up a cricket team in Brittany and of finding opposition. As a result, contact is established with le Moulin CC in Fontaine-Couverte, south Mayenne. First offers of sponsorship received.

August

  • Play at le Moulin – and our first victory!
  • Play third game against les Ormes. We are beaten again, but there is evidence of great improvement in our play as chasing a target of 280 we score over 200, including a century by Danny Stirk.

September

  • Jon meets with Duc de Rohan, who owns the Hippodrome in Josselin, seeking permission to use land in the middle of the Hippodrome as a pitch. M. le Duc says this is not possible, but suggests we contact M. Samson, the Maire at Guégon, as there is more suitable (flat) land in that commune.

October

  • Play final game of season at Gourin where Lee Snelling (one of our original players) has established a team that includes several Breton players. Match lost
  • Jon meets with M. Samson seeking usage of land next to the sports ground for a cricket pitch. M. Samson agrees to discuss with his staff.
  • Jon and Geoff Miller meet with M. Samson who advises that it will not be possible for us to use that ground as it has been earmarked for a big extension to the current sports hall.

November

  • Article about cricket appears in second edition of BritMag (a bi-monthly magazine for British people living in Brittany) featuring pictures of some of the team.

2006

January

  • Application form submitted to form an association, with the club officially named as ‘Club Cricket de l’Oust’.
  • Confirmation received that the Association has been formally created and registered.
  • Jon meets with the Maire of Quily and she agrees in principle that we can use their disused football pitch as a cricket pitch. She advises that we must wait for ratification of her decision from the Quily Town Council, which next meets on 7th February.

February

  • Town Council meeting at Quily agrees that we can use the pitch.
    A home ground at last!

Also looking for other teams for weekend matches.
